The content of the article:

  • Why do you need a timing belt
  • When to change the timing belt
  • Timing Belt Replacement Process

The Chevrolet lineup is ideally suited for use in all regions of our country. True, the uninterrupted and trouble-free operation of all vehicle units depends on timely and competent service. As part of the publication, it is necessary to raise an issue of interest to most owners of a Chevrolet Lanos car, which concerns the independent replacement of the timing belt. Since the implementation of this procedure does not require special delicacy, a motorist of any level can master it, while saving a significant amount. The only thing that needs to be done is to familiarize yourself with the correct sequence of actions.

The purpose of the belt in the timing design

In the design of the timing mechanism, the belt provides an interconnection between the two shafts of its power unit. It is performed in two versions:

  • metal chain
  • rubber belt

In the timing system, it automatically supplies the fuel mixture to the engine cylinders, while simultaneously freeing the unit from exhaust gases. Simply put, the timing belt controls the operation of the intake and exhaust systems. Since the belt is aggregated not only with both engine shafts, but also with its other elements located in the engine compartment, therefore it quickly wears out and fails.

When to change the timing belt on a Chevrolet Lanos

The manufacturer's regulations set a four-year timing belt service life for a 16-valve engine of a Chevrolet Lanos car, or its replacement after 60 thousand kilometers. Since our vehicle operating conditions have never been considered ideal, we should not be equal to this interval, but replace the belt earlier, for example, after 40-50 thousand. Note that in the gas distribution system of the power unit, the belt performs an important function, therefore its unintentional break will lead to tragic consequences for the motor. In this case, the cost and complexity of the repair process will be incommensurate with the procedure for its replacement.

The prerequisites for this event are the following factors:

  • Regulatory term of the manufacturer;
  • Development of the working surface of the belt (cracks, damage, etc.);
  • Wear of the components of the metal chain.

Note that the condition of the belt depends on the intensity of vehicle use. But, there are cases when this element of the gas distribution system failed several hours after installation. Therefore, it is very important to pay attention to its condition and purchase only an original product.

How to independently replace the timing belt on a Chevrolet Lanos

On a sixteen-valve Lanos engine, the procedure for replacing the timing belt on your own should not cause any particular difficulties. To carry it out, you do not need special, expensive equipment and thorough knowledge of the power unit device. The necessary tool is always available from any more or less advanced car owner, namely:

  • jack;
  • end heads;
  • several screwdrivers of various configurations;
  • spanners and spanners.

In addition to preparing the described tool, you must take care of purchasing a new timing belt in advance. The replacement sequence is as follows:

  • Before carrying out work, it is worth removing the interfering air pipe;
  • Dismantle the air intake housing;
  • There are bolts on the power steering pump pulley. They need to be weakened;
  • Unscrew the generator mounting bolt located in its upper part;
  • We loosen the generator belt, after which we remove it;
  • It is necessary to dismantle the power steering pump pulley.

  • Having got to the timing cover, we tighten the bolts of its fastening;
  • Now you need to jack up the front of the car, and then remove the front right wheel, after placing a solid support under the bottom of the car;
  • If a motor protection is provided, it must be removed;
  • We remove the air resonator, which does not allow you to completely get close to the timing system;
  • It is also worth removing the climate control drive;
  • We loosen the crankshaft pulley by turning the bolt securing it;
  • After setting the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC position, it is necessary to check the coincidence of the risks on the casing with the mark on the crankshaft pulley;
  • The lower half of the cover that covers the timing drive must be removed by first unscrewing the mounting bolts from it.

  • There are marks on the camshafts that must be located parallel to each other;
  • The power steering pump mount must be removed by unscrewing the bolts;
  • Before removing the worn timing belt, it is necessary to dismantle the tension roller;
  • Installing a new timing belt is done in reverse order. Before installing it, you need to check the alignment of the marks on the crankshaft and camshaft;
  • If necessary, you can tighten the belt by turning the pump.

It will not be superfluous to assess the condition of the pump, in the ode of which it will be clear whether or not it is worth changing this element.
As you can see, the procedure for self-replacing the timing belt in a Chevrolet Lanos car is not particularly difficult. However, the first time it is carried out on its own, it is better to enlist the help of a more experienced comrade, or to get acquainted with the information in detail, which is presented in abundance on the network.
